Cr Bilal El-Hayek said Mortimer was arguably the Bulldogs’ greatest ever player – “a league legend”.
He said the 65-year-old, pint-sized half back was battered and bruised during his stellar career, which saw him win three premierships for his beloved Bulldogs.
He played 272 games for the club between 1976-1988 and also captained NSW to its first ever State of Origin series victory and played Nine tests for Australia.
“Along with his brothers, Peter and Chris, he has been a loyal supporter of the club and indeed our City. And has always made himself available to the local schools, charitable organisations and the broader community,” Cr El-Hayek said.
Banners to wish Doggies best and honour Mortimer
STREET banners supporting the Bulldogs will be flown around Canterbury Bankstown as a mark of respect for league legend Steve ‘Turvey’ Mortimer who has been diagnosed with dementia, and to wish the team all the best for the upcoming NRL season.
