Bankstown Poetry Slam first to win $10,000 prize

DESCRIBED as a big win for young poets all over Australia, Bankstown Poetry Slam has been presented with the ‘Special Award’ at last week’s NSW Premier’s Literacy Awards.

This is a special category which is not awarded every year and has to be nominated by one of the judges and voted on.
Bankstown Poetry Slam is the first organisation to win the award for “their contribution to the literary life of Australia”.
“A huge thank you to the person that nominated us and all those who voted for us,” said Bankstown Poetry Slam co-founder Sara Mansour, along with Bilal Hafda who runs the monthly slam events and Yasmine Lewis who is program officer and board member.
Bilal said: ”This win has made us feel so proud of our community.
“The $10,000 prize from the award, means we get to continue to support the voices of young people in Bankstown being heard.
“The award will also let us run our nationwide poetry competition, the National Youth Poetry Slam, for the second year in a row.”
