Award literary stars of the future

THE literary stars of Auburn were on show with the winners of the 2021 Auburn Poet Laureate announced at a function at NSW Parliament House.

While the competition and awards ceremony were delayed due to the pandemic and lockdowns, Birrong Girls’ High student Sophie Du took out the first place in the seniors, while Ahimjeet Jana from Wentworth Point Public School, was the winner of the junior competition.
Three finalists were selected from each category, with the winners receiving both a trophy as well as a $500 donation to their school’s P&C.
The other finalists were: Junior – Serena Steiner, St Peter Chanel Primary and Zahra Naizar Ali, Berala Public School; Senior – Kamila Mohsini, Birrong Girls’ High and Evie Wilkins-Ausar, Birrong Girls High.
NSW State Librarian John Vallance presented the awards, complimenting the wonderfully diverse range of poetry on show.
State MP for Auburn, Lynda Voltz, said she was impressed by the students’ fantastic writing talents, which again made judging a difficult job.
“We have some excellent writers and creative talents in Auburn,” she said.
“I’m so proud to see this brilliant work coming out of our local schools.
“Congratulations to Ahimjeet and Sophie and their schools.”
