Award finalist over efforts offering migrants support

IN recognition for her dedication to helping newly arrived residents, Jacobinah (Jackie) Muleya has been nominated for a second time for a 2021 NSW/ACT Regional Achievement and Community Award.

She has created a ‘village’ of love, care and support inside her Auburn home for African and other migrant communities and has lost count of how many she has helped since arriving from Africa about nine years ago.
“We help with food, clothing, furniture, cooking utensils, transport, bonds for rental properties and provide emotional support; many people are very lonely when they arrive and appreciate our family environment.
“We also have people referred to us from Auburn Diversity, SSI and the Salvation Army,” she said.
“If they have nowhere to go, we are happy for them to stay in our home.
“Of course, Covid and the lockdown has made everything a lot more difficult; there’s a lot more need though movements are restricted but we are doing what we can.
“I am thrilled to be nominated for the award but don’t do what I do for any recognition; it’s enough seeing people happy and on their way.”
Winners will be announced in November.
The awards are to encourage, acknowledge and reward the valuable contributions individuals, communities and businesses are making throughout NSW and the ACT.
