John Owsnett, principal of Chambers Fleming Professionals Padstow, says that as the leaves fall and deciduous trees go to sleep for the winter, it is a great time to set your garden up for a blooming spring by pruning shrubs and trees and mulching to keep plants warm over winter.
As winter can often be a dry time, this will also help to hold moisture in so that when spring does come again in a few months, your garden will wake-up raring to go.
He says it is also a good strategy to use the autumn months to prepare your home for a spring sale.
Three months of cooler weather before the big chill of winter sets in, provides plenty of time to complete a few outdoor projects, which will stand your property in good stead once it is placed on the market for sale.
John says painting is one job that comes to mind immediately.
“Visually it is the best upgrade you can make for the cheapest cost and often will add thousands of dollars in value to your home,” he said.
“Autumn is the ideal season for undertaking this task because not only is it cooler conditions to work in if you are DIYing – particularly outside; but it is best for the paint as well.”
John says that paint companies never recommend painting in conditions which are either too hot or too cold, so the moderate temperatures of autumn are ideal.
“Laying new paths or constructing simple decks and paved areas are also great autumn projects because the inevitable disturbance they make to the garden and lawn areas can be wintered in and by spring, will be almost undetectable,” he said.
“Areas that are still looking a little disturbed can be instantly jazzed up with plants, mulch and turf when spring does hit.”
