Autism carers breaking fast at Annual Iftar for Ramadan

CELEBRATING the breaking of the fast, 30 carers of differing denominations have gathered at Autism Community Network’s (ACN) Annual Iftar to mark Ramadan at Cook & Co in Auburn.

The carers (pictured), who all have a child with autism, enjoyed the delicious food and the well-deserved break, making new friendships and sharing experiences.
“I really appreciate the activities ACN provides to me as a carer. They give me a moment for myself and much needed time out,” an attendee said.
ACN is a non-profit organisation that provides free activities and support groups across 14 LGAs, ranging from peer-to-peer support and social groups, to parent and carers support groups and family days.
ACN CEO Vanessa Gauci thanked Carers Gateway for providing the funding for the Iftar event, which was especially significant being held during Autism Awareness Month.
In the spirit of Autism Awareness, ACN members are dusting off their hiking boots and climbing Australia’s biggest mountain, Mount Kosciuszko, on April 23 to raise funds and spread awareness and acceptance.
“As a parent of a child with a disability, some days feel like you are climbing a mountain so why not do the real thing and raise some much-needed funds to support our autism families,” Mrs Gauci said.
