He will continue as a councillor and “advocate on important issues when necessary”, but will now have the opportunity to pursue his career and business aspirations – and spend time with his family.
“They’re (family) the ones who have had to put up with me in good times and bad, and made many sacrifices. I don’t know if it’s good news or bad but they will be seeing a lot more of me,” he said.
Thanking his wife Sally and their “three beautiful children” – and his mum and dad, who “not only raised but supported him” – Cr Asfour, also heaped praise on the many community groups, sporting organisations, “amazing residents”, and businesses he’s dealt with over the years.
He said championing the building of the university in Bankstown CBD, construction of the splash park, revitalising the town centres, bringing waste services in-house, making Canterbury Bankstown a smart city, all-ability playgrounds and seeing the success of Bankstown Bites and Ramadan nights, were just “some of the many highlights”.
“I didn’t kiss many babies but sure shook a lot of hands,” he said.

AFTER 12 years in Canterbury Bankstown’s top job, Cr Khal Asfour, who stepped down as Mayor last week, said “it has been an amazing journey” and an “honour to be mayor”.
