Arrived from Afghanistan 15 years ago and named ‘Volunteer of Year’

HE spoke no English when he arrived from Afghanistan as a refugee 15 years ago and now Regents Park resident Sayeed Karimi has been named the ‘2021 Central Sydney Volunteer of the Year’ at a special ceremony for the NSW Volunteer of the Year Awards.

The NSW Volunteer of the Year Awards are run by The Centre for Volunteering to recognise the outstanding efforts of volunteers working tirelessly across all sections of communities throughout the State.
Though he won a NSW Humanitarian Award earlier this year, Sayeed said he was shocked and surprised at the win since he was up against so many outstanding volunteers from leading organisations.
President of the Afghan Hassanian Youth Association, Sayeed and his helpers have been incredibly busy this year.
During the pandemic, he initiated care packages to help migrants, refugees, people who had lost their jobs and the elderly – a program that has so far helped more than 500 migrant refugees and asylum seekers and 250 vulnerable Australians.
Other achievements include: Craft and conversation classes; cooking and nutrition info; mens monthly support classes; Australian Citizenship test tutoring; women’s driving classes; Dari language classes; volleyball and soccer competitions; youth camps; swimming lessons; casework and settlement assistance; and welfare assistance plus much more.
“I am always striving to help the community in any way I can and don’t do it for any recognition,” he said.
“But I feel very proud and honoured.”
