Archers take aim for Tokyo

FOUR Sydney Olympic Park Archers (SOPA) face a nervous wait on final selections for the rescheduled Tokyo Paralympics after putting in top performances at the first national level archery tournament held in more than a year.

In near perfect shooting conditions, Jonathon Milne took out the Para Open Male Compound title for the sixth year in a row at last month’s Archery Australia’s 2021 Para & VI National Championships, with SOPA club-mates Garry Robinson and Peter Marchant coming in second and third respectively.
National titles were also claimed by SOPA’s Ameera Christina Lee, who won the Para Open Female Compound, and Marek Steiner who took out the Para Open Male Recurve.
Covid 19 restrictions meant it has been two years since the event was last held and the tournament was also a key competition for the Tokyo2020 Paralympic team selection.
Milne, Marchant, Lee and Steiner are among the six archers who have already qualified for Tokyo (August 24 to September 5), however Australia only has a single available quota spot which is likely to go to Milne, who won bronze at the 2016 Rio Paralympics by three points in the men’s individual compound Open.
The remaining Australian qualifiers could still earn a quota spot later in the year.
SOPA is also preparing to host the 2021 Australian Open at the Sydney Olympic Park Archery Centre on May 20-23.
The open-level tournament for Compound and Recurve, with a Barebow test event, has been capped at 140 entrants.
