These ancient wonders of the world – some from even outer space – will be among the highlights of the Bankstown Lapidary Club’s annual exhibition at Greenacre Area Community Centre in early June.
Showcasing the art of cutting gemstones, lapidary also includes silverwork and enamelling.
When the basic skills are learnt, you can create original handmade jewellery of your own design in sterling silver – and experts at the club can show you how.
Operating for over 50 years, the club – comprising about 40 members – is a hub of enthusiastic collectors who meet to swap treasures and learn skills from specialists in the field.
Club president Beverley Hodder says the exhibition will include rare jewellery, fossils, opals, healing crystals, mineral specimens from around the world, mammoth tusks, lapidary supplies, carving demos and a lucky door prize, with a sausage sizzle and light refreshments available.
Adding extra sparkle, an exhibition trader is donating a huge amethyst for the raffle prize.
“It’s stunning and well over a foot in diameter,” Beverly said.
A great day out for families, the exhibition is on the weekend of June 3 and 4 from 9.30am; tickets, $10 for adults and free for under 16s (with a parent).
