All invited to meal to enjoy more support

THE magic of sit-down mealtime happens when families gather together to talk, laugh, share their day-to-day struggles and support each other through life’s ups and downs.

These moments of connection nurture a sense of belonging, leading to greater self-esteem and self-confidence and so it is with the Auburn Youth Centre (AYC) ‘family’ that comes together once a month to enjoy a meal, hear the latest tips for mental health and benefit from a range of services to help with settlement and training and job opportunities.
A NSW Government-funded program off the back of covid to re-establish and increase community connection, the monthly dinners are usually attended by about 80 people, according to AYC Executive Officer Dean de Haas.
“The dinners have been really successful as it’s the perfect opportunity for community members, of all ages and cultures, to re-connect with others with a bit of mental health education thrown in,” he said.
“AYC has a great chef who prepares a beautiful multicultural feast in our onsite kitchen for everyone to enjoy and then at the end, we hand out info packs on local support services or have their representatives in attendance.
“Everyone should come along; it’s a wonderful opportunity to create connections and make new friends.”
It’s free but bookings are essential for the next dinner on July 12 at eventbrite.com.au.
