Former Syrian resident Simon Shahin will share his story on how he came to be a refugee and finally settle in Australia in 2015, at the Refugee Council of Australia event on Wednesday, June 22, 11am-12pm.
After years of living in fear of being killed and witnessing the horrific loss of innocent lives, Simon, his parents and four siblings desperately fled from wartorn Syria and were finally granted temporary asylum in Lebanon.
From there, they sought refugee visas for Australia which were granted.
For Simon, this was nothing short of a miracle.
“My grandparents were not so lucky; my grandfather died just before his visa came through after years of trying,” Simon said.
After arriving here, aged 22, Simon worked for different refugee organisations while improving his English before undertaking study and now works as an electrical engineer for a ‘renewables’ power company.
“Working in the renewables industry was an ambition of mine since childhood so to finally get these qualifications and land a great job is a dream come true,” he said.
“I am looking forward to sharing my experiences with other refugees and will be discussing the challenges and barriers to settlement which can all be overcome with the right attitude, hard work and support.”
