Joining as an SES volunteer about four years ago, the
single mother of three children said the weekly training nights as well as the need to assist during emergency events, gave her an outlet from parenting and her day job as a school administrator.
“I like to show my kids that it doesn’t matter how busy you are, you can always find time to go out and help the community in times of need,” she said.
“When I help older people, it feels like I am helping my grandparents and I’ll continue to do so while ever I am able-bodied, it’s only fair.”
SES volunteers come from all walks of life, bringing with them many different skills, interests and backgrounds. They are united by the purpose of supporting their communities in times of need.
Tara said some volunteers brought skills to the SES, such as carpenters, but you didn’t need any life skills to start SES volunteer training.
“The Auburn SES unit is a wonderful team, who all work together as a whole to get the job done,” she said.
“I encourage all ages to come along to our information night and give it a go.”
Auburn SES will be holding its Annual Volunteer Information Session on Wednesday, August 23, 6.30-8.30pm, at 19-31 Killeen Street, Auburn.
Grab a drink and meet some of the leadership team and other members while you watch the demonstrations unfold in real life.
“The night will fully immerse you into the service and the opportunities open for your development,” Tara said.
