Afro step for mind, body

INSPIRED by dance moves popular in the Zulu kingdom of Shaka Zulu as well as African civil rights activist and dancer Miriam Makeba, personal trainer Sheron Sultan has been enjoying booming attendance at her Afro Step exercise classes at Decathlon Auburn.

Combining high intensity interval training with step aerobics and African dance moves, the program is ideal for calorie burning and super fun, says Sheron.
“I want to create a community for women from all walks of life and empower them with the knowledge, support and resources to get them out of their comfort zone and improve their wellbeing and confidence in a compassionate and fun environment.
“When I had to stop my face to face classes during Covid, I concentrated on my online classes and found that when I resumed at Decatholon Auburn, I had so many more attendees.
“My roots are in South Africa and Mozambique but my heart is in Sydney and as well as improving fitness, I am very determined to improve the mental health of all of my attendees.”
Afro Step is available every Saturday at Decathlon Auburn from 9.30am, with classes costing $15 for the 45-minute workout.
“Membership in my class is made up of all colours but whatever I do, I like to surround myself with black women who I find inspiring and in return, hope to inspire them,” she said.
“Even young kids are enjoying my workouts.”
