Based on the book ‘The Boy Who Could Make Himself Disappear’ in 1968, the story revolves around Roger, a teenager suffering from a speech disorder and emotional issues following the divorce of his parents and his mother’s decision to relocate to from the USA to Australia.
Despite being befriended by some understanding tenants, his mother’s continuing insensitivity causes Roger to ‘disappear’ into a schizophrenic withdrawal.
While it has a disturbing theme, the play has plenty of heart and moments of gentle humour and compassion and Liam said it was a familiar theme that audience members would be able to relate to.
“It does delve into mental health issues but it’s beautifully portrayed with humour as well as being thought-provoking,” he said.
Starting his professional career at 13 as one of The Addams Family at the Lyric theatre, Liam has been singing professionally, playing piano and composing since a very young age.
“It was a lot of fun switching between the characters in ‘The Disappearance’ but I am most excited about showcasing my original music score throughout the production,” he said.
“Credit also should go to Mo Lovegrove who helped write some of the songs.”
Catch the show at the Chippen St Theatre from October 10-22.
