Made possible after NSW Health provided funding through its Staying Active initiative in collaboration with the Variety Club, the classes are designed to make exercise accessible to people who often face barriers.
Instructors for the new class, run in partnership with the Recreation, Sports and Aquatics Club (RSAC) in Bankstown, say the class will accommodate a wide range of participants.
“RSAC has been providing recreation opportunities for people with a disability for over 30 years,” fitness instructor Kate DeMayo said.
“So we are working with them to run classes that welcome people with a disability and which cater to older adults by including a focus on balance and strength, both of which are vitally important for older adults.
“Using hand weights, resistance bands, gym equipment, bodyweight exercises, fun activities and no complicated routines, we will work to strengthen the major muscle groups.”
Home exercise suggestions and materials are also available on request.
Class starts at 1pm and cost $10 or covered by NDIS.
