“It’s been a great experience in Holroyd Garden for three years now,” Samira explained.
“I have independently tried my best to be there for our Afghan women who have passion for our religion and culture without being racist to any other backgrounds.”
“The gatherings were held monthly but as everyone enjoyed it so much, I started to organise weekly meetings.
“All the women feel comfortable and enjoy cooking our own handmade Afghan food in the park, such us BuLaNi, Ashak, Manto, kebab and many more delicious dishes.
“In our culture, we have two Eid celebrations, ‘Nawrooz’ which is the Afghan New Year and in our religion, we have special ‘Welcome Event’ for our sisters who visit ‘Makkah’ – all of which we celebrate at our gatherings.”
Samira says she feels she has successfully achieved her goal of giving the women a break from the house, with many who were previously lonely now motivated, energised and appreciating living in Australia more.
Samira has her sights set now on holding the next gathering in a community hall.
