Celebrates 70th with glimpse at past

PADSTOW Heights Public School has kicked off its 70th anniversary celebrations with a ‘Day in the Life of 1954’ event, allowing students to experience a slice of the past.

The staff worked hard to source original furniture, recreating a classic classroom, along with period-appropriate lessons, vintage games such as quoits and even a traditional milk delivery in a 1950s classroom.
To make the day even more special and sharing in the nostalgic journey, Channel 7’s Sunrise team arrived to enjoy the fun at the school from where they presented their weather news segment.
Former student John Slocombe who got in touch after the segment went to air, said he started at the school the year after it opened in 1955.
“We had good teachers who not only cared about their students but took an active interest in what we all did outside of school hours,” he said.
“Some of the teachers names I remember are Miss Tyler, Head Mistress of Kindergarten, Mr Keatley, Mr MacDonald, Headmasters at different stages, Mrs Fisher, Mrs Anderson, Mrs Dean, Mr Jones, Miss James and Mr Hutton.”
Continuing with the celebrations, the school will host an open afternoon ‘birthday party’ on Thursday, August 22, 3.30-6.30pm, with everyone invited.
P&C President Renee Peddie said there would be food trucks, face-painting, hair braiding, school tours, a memorabilia showcase in the school hall and music to help create a party atmosphere.
“It won’t be as big as a school fete but it will certainly be a party as well as a mini reunion as we expect loads of former students and staff to turn up for the celebration,” she said.
