Bulldogs five-eighth Matt Burton snatched victory with a golden point field goal for the second time in a week to down an injury hit Warriors team 13-12 at Accor Stadium on Saturday.
This should be a confidence booster for the three Canterbury Bankstown stars heading to the State of Origin camp for the Game Three decider on Wednesday, July 17.
Bulldogs Captain Stephen Crichton has once again been selected at centre while Matt Burton has been named 18th man for NSW but may play following injuries to Latrell Mitchell and Bradman Best.
Hooker Reed Mahoney will spend the week in the Queensland camp after being named in the extended squad for the first time since 2021.
He made 69 tackles against the Warriors on Saturday in a game in which the scores were locked at 12-12 for 32 minutes until Burton managed to pilot his fourth field goal attempt which bounced in – in the 88th minute.
Earlier Burton had sprinted away before finding Bronson Xerri in support and the speedster raced over the tryline to open the scoring in the 20th minute before the Warriors hit back.
Soon locked in at 12-12, Roger Tuivasa-Sheck had a chance to put the home team in front with four minutes remaining but missed his mark before the deal was sealed 12 minutes later.
Bulldogs coach Cameron Ciraldo said there was quality football played on both sides.
“No-one wanted to take a backward step and that was awesome for both teams moving forward and really good for us,” he said.
The Bulldogs have a bye this weekend before flying to Townsville in Round 20, for their Sunday, July 21, game from 6.15pm against the Cowboys.
