Youth star in showcase at Sydney Opera House

PADSTOW Park Public School music ensemble students will join over 1,000 outstanding young musicians and vocalists performing in the Acacia Concert during the Festival of Instrumental Music (FOIM) at the Sydney Opera House in June.

Featuring 12 treble recorder players and one cellist, students are very much looking forward to performing at the Sydney Opera House along with other NSW Public Schools students, according to teacher Kay Taylor.
“These instrumental ensemble students are also in the Festival Choir at Padstow Park and will perform again at the Sydney Opera House in the Festival of Choral Music 2023 in September,” Ms Taylor said.
“Two of the ensemble students who play treble recorder also auditioned successfully to compete at one of the State Music Festivals, the Primary Proms, at Sydney Town Hall in September.
“Another two have been selected to perform in the State Recorder Ensemble at the FOIM as an individual item.”
Such is the success of her work with the students that Ms Taylor was asked by the Department of Education’s Arts Unit, to develop a set of resources and lessons for use by teachers whose students are taking part in the FOIM. This resource was recently released to accompany the Acacia Concert’s finale piece, ‘The High Road’, composed by Tracy Burjan, with 12 Padstow Park ensemble students showcasing their talents in the video clips performing a folk dance and percussion activities to accompany the written document.
