As part of Canterbury Bankstown Council’s 2023 Reconciliation Week celebrations, the inaugural First Nations Art Competition is open to children and teens up to the age of 17, with three age categories and prizes of up to $80 to be won.
Aunty Lyn Martin, local Darug elder and president of the Bankstown Aboriginal Education Consultative Group, said the aim of the competition was to teach children about National Reconciliation Week which is held annually from May 27 to June 3.
“Reconciliation Week is a time of sharing and trying to get other cultures to understand our culture,” Aunty Lyn said.
She said the competition was a great opportunity for children to learn and explore how they could contribute to achieving reconciliation in their communities.
Mayor Khal Asfour said reconciliation must also live in the hearts, minds and actions of all of us.
Entries for the First Nations Art Competition are open until May 7. Artworks will be displayed at the Bryan Brown Theatre where the winners will be announced on Monday, May 29.
