These days older men gather to pass on skills to younger men, to work on community projects together and to enjoy enjoy the company of others and bus trips away.
Auburn City Mens Shed secretary Peter Nicola says his group have been busy making boxes for bees as well as birds in local parks.
“We were at Bunnings and ran into a couple of council staffers who recognised our t-shirts and came up and thanked us for the bird boxes which we only built and donated last week,” he said.
“We were chuffed, it’s a great feeling knowing you are helping local wildlife and of course, fingers crossed the birds will start breeding in them soon and then we can celebrate the project as a big success.”
When they’re not building new homes for creatures, the group – which meets on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, 7am-12pm, in the old scout hall at 356 Park Road, Auburn – turns their attention to making toys for their Christmas drive or making cutting boards, serving trays, coat hanger hooks and other household items to name a few.
“We also go on bus trips and welcome new members who may have dementia or other disabilities; we will work out a nice job for you,” Peter said.

Mens Shed inviting more to join in fun with ‘birds, bees’
LONG been a part of the Aussie culture, the modern Mens Shed is an updated version of the classic shed in the backyard where the menfolk would gather, build or fix items and solve the world’s problems over a pint or a cuppa.
