Try bowls at Open Day to aid Legacy

IF you’ve never played bowls but have wondered about why it’s so popular, why not grab a group of friends and head to Birrong Sports Bowling Club to give it a try at the inaugural Charity Lawn Bowls Open Day.

With experienced bowlers also invited to come along and polish their skills or help assist the ‘newbies’, proceeds of the day will be donated to Legacy which is this year celebrating its 100-year centenary of supporting the families of war veterans who have lost their life or were injured during conflict.
Bankstown Legacy Secretary Alan Rawlinson says the group doesn’t get much support outside of the community for which they are grateful.
He was introduced to Legacy at the age of seven when the group stepped in to help his mother and older sister after the death of his father who had fought in New Guinea and Borneo.
“There’s a lot more younger families to look after now too whose husbands and fathers fought in Korea, Pakistan and Afghanistan,” he said.
Alan said they’d planned a spectacular day on the green for those who take part, with raffles, sausage sizzles, a bowls spider, free coaching and a lucky door prize.
“Bring your mates along to create a team of three for $30 or $15 a person,” he said.
It’s on offer on Friday, March 31, from 12pm, with registrations essential on 9645 8600.
