Guiding girls on way to enjoy fulfilling life

ONE week you could find yourself abseiling or learning how to cook with food rations and the next week might see you surfing, juggling or learning how to save a life.

Such are the interesting opportunities for personal growth and experience on offer every week at Girl Guides.
With more than 19,000 members, the Girl Guides program is based on shared leadership and decision-making at all ages from five to 17 years.
Guide leader at Auburn-Lidcombe since 2007, Ruth Miller (Guiding name ‘Kungala’) started in Guides as a six-year-old in 1995.
“I have continued with Guiding because it’s so awesome,” she said.
“It’s given me so many opportunities to try new things, develop different skills and even travel overseas as I have attended a Guiding Jamboree in London.
“I’ve also made many friends through Guiding.
“The girls call me Kungala as a mark of respect and there’s nothing I enjoy more than teaching them new things.”
Ruth said now was the perfect time of year to join the Girl Guides.
“We’ve got loads of fun, interesting activities coming up this term,” she said.
“We’ve got a relaxation night, a gardening night, an escape room challenge, camping, an Easter egg painting lesson with an artist and loads more.
“We find out what the girls would like to do and plan our activities around that but like to mix up things.
“Our whole philosophy is friends, adventure and fun and we’d love for more girls to join.”
The group meets on Mondays, 6-7.45pm, in the Girl Guides Hall on Olympic Drive at Lidcombe.
