The Health Navigation volunteers help newly arrived refugees and asylum seekers to navigate the healthcare system and get to their appointments but more volunteers are needed.
Passionate volunteer, Auburn’s Rani came to Australia from Iraq in 2019 and though not having a language barrier, found the healthcare system difficult to negotiate.
“Over time and with the support of the Refugee Health Service, I was able to understand the health system better,” he said.
“As I was provided with the support I needed when I first arrived, I wanted to do the same for other refugees who are facing these challenges.”
Rani started volunteering with the Health Navigation Program at the Refugee Health Service two years ago.
“I enjoy it as it makes such a positive difference in people’s lives and is such a fulfilling experience,” he said.
Volunteer program manager Annie Ku says volunteers help to build on the strengths, skills and confidence of the refugees and asylum seekers.
If you can spare a few hours a week helping refugee clients get to their health appointments by car or public transport, with travel expenses reimbursed, call Annie on 8781 8183 or email Annie.Ku@health.nsw.gov.au.
Volunteers urged to help refugees
REFUGEES and asylum seekers face many challenges accessing healthcare due to transport and language difficulties and the complexities of the healthcare system.
