Agriculture Minister Dugald Saunders said the Eat More Seafood program gives fish shops and co-ops the opportunity to reel in grants of up to $100,000 to increase community awareness of the benefits of buying seafood locally.
“Our seafood industry is still getting back on its feet after consecutive years of drought and floods impacting production, so it’s more important than ever to support small seafood businesses and pile up our plates with local fish, oysters, mussels and more, caught from NSW waters,” he said.
Yugo Seafoods manager Dane says it is great the industry is getting funding to market the benefits of eating more seafood.
“It’s always the healthiest option, with high quality seafood available all yearlong in NSW,” he said.
“I myself make sure I eat it three or four times a week and I’ll be checking out the funding that’s on offer and how we can help.”
Ocean Food Chullora and Panania Fish Market hadn’t heard of the program but are also now interested.
“Whatever can be done to promote the industry is a wonderful idea; I am definitely going to check it out,” Panania Fish Market manager Le said.
