After a two-year absence over Covid, Lakemba Women’s Health Clinic – run by 4cs – is now back in operation with nurse Comfort Danquah conducting free women’s health checks every second Wednesday, with the next on February 22.
Hailing from Ghana, with other multilingual staff on site, Comfort says she is happy to be back visiting Lakemba and is keen to assist local women with their health needs as much as possible.
“People laugh at my name and tell me I am in the right business as a caring nurse,” she said.
“I want to make a difference in women’s lives and ensure they are having all of their health checks on time; it’s easy to put these off if you are young but disease can strike at an age, my friend died of breast cancer at 31.”
The appointments are 45-minutes each to allow Comfort enough time to thoroughly conduct the health checks, including breast, contraception, pap smears, pregnancy and emotional health.
“With the HPV virus as widespread as the common cold when you become sexually active and up to 80 per cent of women having it at sometime in their lives, it’s important to always have your health checks on time and avoid worse problems if you leave it too late,” she said.

MUMS and women generally often put themselves last when it comes to health checks and in multicultural communities, this situation can be worse because of language and financial barriers.
