School welcomes principal

AMONG the dozens of unfamiliar faces at St Peter Chanel Catholic Primary School in Regents Park at the start of the new school year, was none other than new Principal – Sister Cecilia Joseph – the first religious appointment in 30 years.

As an avid swimmer growing up in Ohio in the USA, Sr Joseph dreamed of venturing to Sydney to fulfil her Olympic dreams.
“When I finally arrived as a religious sister in 2008 and saw signs around Regents Park stating ‘Home of the 2000 Olympic Games’, I knew that it was God’s plan all along to get me here in a way I could never have expected,” she said.
After spending a few years in primary schools in the USA, she was asked to come to Sydney to work for World Youth Day and then stay on to teach at Trinity Catholic College.
After a few years, she returned to the USA to serve as a principal before returning to Trinity in 2018.
“I am now very pleased to embark on this new adventure,” she said.
“St Peter Chanel Catholic Primary School has a beautiful legacy of religious and lay leadership over the past 98 years.
“I have always felt close to St Mary of the Cross MacKillop, and am excited to continue the work her sisters began when they founded the school in 1925.”
Sr Joseph said she was eager to get to know each and every student and family.
“My hope is that we continue to grow as an authentically Catholic school, that we are passionate about our faith, that we are academically excellent, and that we form the next generation of leaders. I feel we are already well on our way.”
