Jumps up as nation’s best

SHE’S still only 14 but Bankstown athlete Piper Todd has again showcased her all-rounder abilities winning her second national championship against participants that were two years her senior.

In 2021, she claimed the U14 Pentathlon, then last year the U16 Heptathlon and this year successfully defended that title.
In winning her 2023 title, she improved in five events and remained steady in two others.
She has made big progress in the hurdles – half a second improvement, high jump – 5cm, shot put – a metre, and long jump – 25cm.
With a personal best tally of 4,480 points, the East Hills Girls Technology High School student next takes on the state’s elite at Little Athletics NSW Championships in Dubbo in March ahead of the Australian Track and Field Championships in Brisbane in April, qualifying in the heptathlon, javelin and hurdles events.
Mum Kim said that after starting Piper with Bankstown Little Athletics when she was aged four, she thought her love of sport may be waning by this age but it’s only getting stronger.
“She loves her sport and is just so dedicated,” Kim said.
“Dad was a swimmer and I did karate but apart from that, we don’t know where she gets it from.
“She just keeps getting better and better and although she has her heart set on becoming a paramedic when she leaves school, she would also like to focus professionally on competing in heptathlons.
“We can’t wait to see how far she goes.”
