Starting up last year, the class was made possible after NSW Health provided funding through its Staying Active initiative in collaboration with the Variety Club and is designed to make exercise accessible to people who often face barriers.
Run in partnership with the Recreation, Sports and Aquatics Club (RSAC) in their Greenfield Parade rooms opposite Bankstown Sports, the class accommodates a wide range of participants.
“RSAC has been providing recreation opportunities for people with a disability for over 30 years,” fitness instructor Kate DeMayo said.
“So we work with them to run classes that welcome people with a disability and which cater to older adults by including a focus on balance and strength, both of which are vitally important for older adults.
“Using hand weights, resistance bands, gym equipment, bodyweight exercises, fun activities and no complicated routines, we work to strengthen the major muscle groups.”
Home exercise suggestions and materials are also available on request.
“We invite more participants to come along and enjoy the benefits; one participant Troy has never missed a class because he gets so much out of it.”
Classes start at 1pm on Thursdays, with the first one back for the year on February 2, and cost $10 or are covered by NDIS.
