Lions’ den growing with young, old invited to join

ROARING to life at the end of last year after hibernating during covid and struggling with ageing membership, Canterbury Bankstown Lions are on the hunt for new blood.

Inviting men and women of all ages and faiths to get involved if they have a few hours to spare a month, Lions president Christine Nassif says that by becoming a Lion, you will not only be impacting your community positively but will also be learning and growing as an individual.
After a food drive organised in Bankstown Central in December, not only were the Lions able to collect more than $30,000 worth of non-perishable food items, which were donated to charity ‘One Meal’, but also met many people expressing interest in joining.
“After a couple of introductory meetings, the club was recharged and renamed the Canterbury Bankstown Lions Club,” Christine said.
Born in Australia but growing up in Lebanon where she witnessed the impact Lions make in disaster recovery, Christine said she didn’t hesitate to get involved after hearing the former club was struggling with membership.
“There are Lions all over the world working behind the scenes; their role is important to any community including ours right here,” she said.
“Apart from our food drives, we will be manning the barbecue and giving away sandwiches at Roselands pool on Australia Day and looking at other ways we can help; we have a lot of big ideas and you can be a part of that.”
The club meets at Bankstown RSL on the first Wednesday of the month, with the next on February 1, from 6.30pm.
