Cumberland City Council be giving away up to 2,200 native trees and shrubs to residents, including various species of grevilleas, acacias, banksia and bottlebrush.
Residents will be able to select up to two plants per household and must register at eventbrite.com.au, with plants to be collected at Auburn Botanic Gardens on Saturday, February 25, 9am-3pm.
A council spokesperson says the NSW Government has committed $10 million in funding to help increase tree canopy cover with a mix of native and exotic, deciduous or evergreen trees, providing shade in summer while allowing sunlight into homes and onto roofs for solar power, particularly in winter.
“That’s why we’re excited to have received a share to plant more trees, as part of the NSW Government’s Greening Our City grants,” the spokesperson said.
“We have been working on a range of innovative projects to reduce urban heat within Cumberland City and plant as many trees as we can.”
Invite all to cool down with free plant
THOUSANDS of free native plants will be offered to residents to help cool the suburbs, improve air quality and increase habitat to support birds and wildlife.
