Cost not safety rules car buyer

WITH vehicle age and relative safety being one of the key contributors to road fatalities, safe vehicle choices can have a significant effect on your survivability in a crash.

People looking to buy a second-hand car can now make more informed choices with the release of the 2022 Used Car Safety Ratings guide by Transport for NSW.
Transport for NSW spokesperson Tara McCarthy says the guide features safety ratings for 289 vehicles manufactured in the past 20 years.
“Your car choice could impact whether you survive a crash; a driver of the worst vehicle rated is eight times more likely to be killed or seriously injured in the same crash than the same driver in the safest vehicle.,” she said.
However, a City Car Gallery Yagoona spokesperson says the more safety features a vehicle has, the more expensive it usually is.
“Most people can’t afford that and are only looking to stick within their budget,” he said.
“I suppose it’s a good tool to have but I don’t think I’ve ever been asked about safety features.”
A Jacko Wheels Bankstown spokesperson says it’s good to know there is a Used Car Safety Ratings guide but he prefers to do a personal property security search through the ANCAP safety rating on each car that is brought in.
“Some cars look safe but you can’t ever just leave it at that,” he said.
