Swimmer, 18, breaks nation’s ‘age record’

TAKING on the best in Asia and the Pacific in the Virtus Oceania Asia Games in Brisbane last month, Revesby Swim Club star Lachlan Hanratty, 18, broke the Australian Age Record while scoring a bronze in the 200m breaststroke.

Taking part in the international multi-sport competition in the Oceania Asia region for elite athletes with an intellectual impairment, he also scored gold in the 4x100m mixed medley relay with Bankstown Sports star Yasmin-Bella Younes, 16.
With both coached at Harlee Elite Swim Squad by Alex Clarke and Tony Sobkowski and part of the Australian Swimming Team, Lachlan also came fourth in the 50m breaststroke and scored a silver in the men’s 4×100 medley relay while Yasmin-Bella came fourth in the 50m butterfly, fifth in the 50m freestyle and was part of the women’s 4x50m relay which won silver.
Lachlan’s Dad Andrew says Lachlan was extremely chuffed to break the Australian Age Record.
“He’s always going after the medals and is very proud of himself,” Andrew said.
“It was quite the achievement because apart from competing against the best in Asia and the Pacific, there were also a few ‘visitor’ swimmers from the USA and Europe.”
Lachlan said: “It was very exciting to win my first international swimming medal. The relay races were lots of fun and taught me, don’t ever give up!”
Harlee Elite Swim Squad Head Coach Alex said he was extremely proud of their success.
“I knew they would do well but their performance exceeded my expectations,” he said.
