Initially taking root when the Josephite Justice – Sisters of St Jospeh received a $20,000 from the Federal MP for Watson, Tony Burke, to commemorate the Jubilee, Sisters Of Saint Joseph’s Sister Jan Barrett approached Holy Spirit College at Lakemba and the tree-planting idea was born.
Facilitated by Holy Spirit Year 10 students – Helen Tran, Eliano Arbid and Lisa Maree Marta, Principal Kevin Griffiths and teacher Louis Kirk, the project launch of ‘Sprouting Change: Planting Across Boundaries’ was attended by representatives from other local primary and high schools including Lakemba Muslim Association late last month.
Ms Kirk said they decided to invite other schools, businesses and community members to come on board to strengthen ties.
“Together we are working in collaboration using this money to join forces with various members and organisations within our amazing community to work with each other in planting trees,” she said.
“This will in turn boost community bonds and help the local environment both aesthetically and environmentally.
“We gifted every organisation who attended the launch a beautiful Callistemon (Bottle Brush) to take back to the school or group to plant.
“We are very excited and hope to have all the sites identified across the local government area and trees planted within the next six months.”
Tree planting project branching out
A PROJECT to plant 70 trees in seven locations across Canterbury Bankstown to celebrate the Queen’s Jubilee or 70th anniversary on the throne earlier this year, has now sprouted to over 1,000 trees after word spread and more were keen to get involved.s
