Need funding to fix potholes

THE State Government is being urged to “cough up the funds” for much-needed road repairs and safety improvements at a dangerous intersection, following another near fatal collision.

Canterbury Bankstown Councillor Bilal El-Hayek has called on State Government to support councils affected by extreme weather conditions by shovelling more cash into funding for pothole and road repairs, while Cr Rachelle Harika wants safety works carried out at the Marion and Edgar streets’ intersection in Bankstown, before someone is seriously injured or killed.
Cr El-Hayek says the Government must acknowledge and accept that councils are struggling to keep pace with the deteriorating conditions of our roads due to the unpredictable and inclement weather.
“It is imperative that the NSW Government needs to heed the call of councils across Sydney and the greater metropolitan area and shovel out some extra cash for us,” he said.
Since the beginning of 2022, the council has carried out temporary repairs to around 1,650 pot holes, costing hundreds of thousands of dollars – and “there is much more to be done”.
“So, let’s get the funding rolling in, so we can steamroll this issue,” he said.
Cr Harika called for the Government to fund right turn arrow signal phasing for motorists travelling in both directions (north-south) along Edgar Street.
She said residents living near the intersection have many stories about near misses and unfortunately several people have been hospitalised after collisions involving motorists turning right from Edgar Street into Marion Street.
And she doesn’t want to see anything worse happen.
“The signal phasing being made a priority is in the best interests of community safety and saving lives,” she said.
