They are now appealing for everyone to object – before it’s too late – to the rezoning of the 19-hectare site for residential purposes, and the demolition of most of the purpose-built structures and facilities on the site to make way for 430 dwellings, expected to accommodate around 1,300 new residents.
Their objections include increased traffic chaos, a lack of educational facilities and poor infrastructure to cope with an increase in residents.
“It is vital for local residents to make their views heard, and heard now, if we are to secure the best outcome for this unique site,” a spokesperson said.
More than 100 locals and politicians rallied at the site last month to express their disappointment, while more than 2,000 have signed an online petition calling for the site to be retained for public education.
Mirvac said its vision was to create a connected network with a diversity of housing types, community gathering areas and an emphasis of green open spaces.
Local action group, The Future of WSU Milperra Campus, has put forward a proposal for the State Government to re-acquire a 7-hectare parcel of this “prized community asset”, containing most of the buildings and facilities, and re-purposing it as a co-educational, selective high school.
“Such an institution is desperately needed,” it says.
