“This 75-minute performance, conducted by acclaimed musician Sarah Penicka-Smith, features local talents, including internationally renowned baritone Warwick Fyfe, soprano Sarah Cherlin, tenor Joshua Oxley, poets J. Marahuyo, Paris Rosemont and Alasdair David Carter, alongside the energised Slam Messiah Chamber Ensemble and powerful River City Voices singers,” she said.
Penicka-Smith hopes this performance will allow those who’ve never heard it to experience the drama of the work.
“Handel was a very theatrical composer who loved a good story,” she said.
“We’re offering this new version because we want to offer new audiences a way in to one of the greatest choral works ever written.”
Violinist Sagar Nagaraj is “excited to see how it all fits together” while performance poet Alasdair Carter says he’s keen to “explore the idea of a saviour that is accessible to all kinds …they don’t all wear capes and halos”.
Book tickets ($25-45) for Friday, December 16, from 7.30pm at riversideparramatta.com.au.
Groundbreaking Australian premiere
RESIDENTS are invited to be part of a groundbreaking Australian premiere when a choral Christmas tradition meets a beloved Western Sydney art form at Riverside Theatres in December.
Presented by Cumberland’s flagship symphonic choir, River City Voices (RCV), and in partnership with WestWords, this will be Handel’s Messiah, as you’ve never seen or heard it before.
RCV chief Inara Molinari says new work by three slam poets will interweave with Handel’s inspired music and Charles Jennens’ epic text to create western Sydney’s very own Slam Messiah.
