Mr Lollipop urging more to apply

THEY call him ‘Mr Lollipop’ but Andrew Emmans doesn’t mind a bit.

In fact the St Mary’s Catholic Primary School Crossing Supervisor at Georges Hall, wouldn’t have it any other way.
“It puts a smile on my face every morning, seeing the children and parents so happy, and knowing that I am keeping them safe and making their world a better place,” he said.
Andrew, 55, is one of about 1,300 school crossing supervisors across the State but more are needed, especially in Canterbury Bankstown, after many ‘lollipop people’ failed to return to the role after covid.
School crossing supervisors play a key role in promoting safe driver and pedestrian behaviours at pedestrian crossings near schools.
They also help children develop the skills to cross streets safely at all times, with only three categories of people legally permitted to stop road traffic in NSW – police officers, Transport for NSW (TfNSW) authorised traffic controllers and TfNSW School Crossing Supervisors.
On the job for the past two years, Andrew says he’s sorry he didn’t apply for the role sooner.
“I just love it and being semi retired, it’s the perfect job where you work for just an hour in the morning and afternoon,” he said.
“The job gives you the flexibility to pursue other work or engagements during the day.
“You must undertake about six hours of training which covers commonsense road rules as well as what to do in different situations.
“You then complete on the job training with an experienced supervisor and even during school holidays, except for the Christmas break, you get paid and it’s certainly decent pocket money.
“I can’t recommend it enough.”
