Orchids at bloomin’ best

SHOWCASING beautiful blooms to brighten up your day, the Panania East Hills Orchid Society will host its Spring Show at the Campsie Centre next Saturday.

The show – from 9am-4pm on Saturday, September 3 – will feature a range of vibrant plants for sale just in time for Father’s Day.
With potting demonstrations on at 11am and 1pm, you can get tips from experienced orchid growers who will be in attendance.
Expect to see flowers in every colour of the rainbow, according to society treasurer Paula O’Neill.
“The only colour they don’t come in is black,” she said.
“There are many different genres with the cymbidium orchid one of the stars; they come in a variety of shades, including white, pink, orange, apricot, brown, red, burgundy, yellow, cream and green.”
Society president Kevin O’Neill says orchid-growing is a fantastic hobby and ideal for beginners.
“We’ve been growing orchids for 30 years and just love the beauty of them,” he said.
“They’re all so different; some of the flowers might be six inches across and others are the size of a match head.
“There will be a range of varieties for you to enjoy or make a purchase and start your own orchid-growing enterprise at home.”
Meeting on the second Monday of the month at Panania Diggers Club, 28 Childs Street, the society also holds monthly stalls at Campsie Centre to raise funds for Canterbury Hospital, with the next on this Thursday, 8am-2.30pm.
There are always orchids and other goods including handknits, books and bric-a-brac for sale.
