There is one particular exercise that stands out from the rest – Tai Chi.
Famously known as ‘moving meditation’, it provides gentle stretching for the muscles, as well as relaxing the mind, helping to boost overall well-being.
Residents can give this ancient practice a try for free in two outdoor sessions next month all starting at 10am: Friday, September 16, at Auburn Centre for Community; and Friday, September 23, at Central Gardens, Merrylands.
Hosted by Cumberland Council and the Australian Academy of Tai Chi and Qigong, the Tai Chi sessions provide moderate aerobic training equal to walking at a moderate pace but with less effort.
Practitioner Master Aaron Khor says the slowness of Tai Chi movements, in combination with placing weight on one leg at a time, leads to loading on the skeleton which promotes strong bones.
“The slow, repetitive movement results in dynamic stretching, which enhances overall flexibility,” he said.
“Tai Chi is suitable for everyone with no age limit and will invigorate and rejuvenate your physical and mental health.”
Tai Chi newcomer Gwen Woodley said: “I used to rely on all kinds of drugs to relieve my hypertension, rheumatism, stiff joints and insomnia.
“Since taking up Tai Chi I have thrown away the drugs. I have found the natural way to health and relaxation. I am now more energetic, relaxed and alive”
