Mother Lametta Fadlallah, 48, and hairdresser Amneh al-Hazouri, 39, were gunned down inside a silver four-wheel drive in Hendy Street in Revesby, before it was driven to nearby Weston Street by one of the other occupants, who alerted emergency services.
Two other occupants of the car, a 20-year-old man and a 16-year-old girl, were shaken but uninjured.
Ms Fadlallah, a mother of two, was known to police and has a history of associations and relationships with other identities known to police. She died at the scene while the other woman, who was an “innocent party” was taken to hospital in a critical condition, where she later died.
The shooting has sent shockwaves through the community, which, like Homicide Squad Commander, Detective Superintendent Danny Doherty, is asking “how could this happen?”
Det Supt Doherty said it was an appalling attack on two women.
“It’s not acceptable by any standards. It’s unprecedented, really, and we’re determined to get the answers for the family,” he said.
“These are the hallmarks of a planned attack. It was methodical. It was planned.”
Police established several crime scenes where they believe the shooting took place, as well at Revesby, Yagoona and Moorebank where three burnt out cars were found.
Det Supt Doherty said underworld figures used to operate by “unwritten laws” where women and children were protected from being attacked – a rule he no longer believed applied.
“The rule books have been thrown out the window.”
He said police have put significant resources into the investigation and have carried out line searches and spoken to residents, but they need the help of the community.
“We’re determined to get the answers, but the only way we can do this is to get help from the public,” Det Supt Doherty said.
Anyone who may have information, dashcam or CCTV from the surrounding areas, is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
