Every year on the second Friday in August, Australian’s everywhere are asked to get silly for a serious cause to raise funds for Red Nose Day – whether it’s hosting a morning tea, casual dress day or trivia night, buying merchandise or anything in-between, everyone can help.
The money raised will help save little lives by funding research and practical support services like the Red Nose Safe Sleep Advice Line, which new parents can call if they are concerned about baby sleep safety, as well as Red Nose’s 24/7 counselling and support services for grief-stricken families who lose a baby.
New data released by the Australian Government shows there has been an increase in stillbirths in Australia but a reduction in the number of neonatal and SIDS deaths.
The new data shows 2,997 babies aged under one died in the year, up 51 compared to 2,946 deaths over the previous year.
Red Nose Australia CEO Keren Ludski says the data shows why Red Nose Day is needed now more than ever.
“It is simply heartbreaking to see the number of Australians experiencing the death of a baby going up,” she said.
“While the numbers of SIDS and neonatal deaths have decreased, we need to continue the fight to get this number even lower. A really practical way Australians can help turn this around is by donating to Red Nose Day this Friday, August 12, and help fund our new SIDS research grant.
“Please donate to Red Nose Day if you can, because every dollar makes such a difference.”
