You can make a difference by joining Bankstown’s Abby Cairns and registering for this year’s Ration Challenge to raise urgent funds for refugees.
A powerful and thought-provoking fundraising initiative, the Ration Challenge empowers all to stand in solidarity with those who are living as refugees by only eating rations for a week.
Everyone that registers will receive a ration pack in the mail, containing the same rations, in the same quantities, as those distributed to Syrian refugees in camps in Jordan – just a small amount of rice, beans, chickpeas, lentils, fish, oil and flour.
Abby says she is taking part in the challenge to get the conversation going and raise awareness about how tough survival is for many in the world.
“It’s not easy surviving on just beans, rice and lentils but I thought that for me to take part is just a small way I can hopefully make a big impact,” she said.
Already raising over $800 through sponsors, Abby is encouraging others to do their bit to help.
“If everyone got on board, we could help so many more escaping war and famine,” she said.
In its first year in 2014, about 100 people took part and raised $60,000 – enough to feed 277 refugees for a year.
Since then, it has raised over $24 million worldwide to support conflict and disaster affected communities.
This year’s Challenge takes place between June 19-25; register at actforpeace.rationchallenge.org.au.
