Kokoda vet, 98, gets yard makeover

ANZAC Day is time for us all to reflect and pay our respect to those who served their country with distinction and this year the team at Better Homes and Gardens gave a special thanks to one of the last surviving diggers of the Kokoda Trail Campaign, Reg Chard.

The Villawood resident who fought in Papua New Guinea received a complete yard makeover for an ANZAC Day special of the popular TV show.
For more than 65 years Reg has kept his home as neat as a pin but at 98-years-old, there’s a few jobs that are just a little too difficult for him, so the Better Homs and Gardens team of Adam Dovile, Charlie Albone and Johanna Griggs, gave him a richly deserved front of house and garden makeover.
Reg, who still drives and volunteers at the Kokoda Track Memorial Walkway in Concord, said it was a “real surprise” and the “nicest thing anyone’s ever done” for him.
“They put a picket fence up out the front, new gardens and painted all of my concrete … it’s like a new home.”
Reg spent 14 months on the Kokoda track, and he’s continued serving our community long after the war. He selflessly shares his stories with school children and visitors as a volunteer tour guide at the Kokoda Track Memorial Walkway in Concord.
Canterbury Bankstown Mayor Khal Asfour inspected the new garden and said it was fitting that Reg’s home was selected for the makeover.
“I popped in to catch up with Reg this week and I was thrilled to see the front yard looking incredible!” Mayor Asfour said.
“I was amazed by his stories and his exploits from the Kokoda Track Campaign. He recounted in minute detail, the events that occurred during his time there.”
