Veteran, 98, ‘service was best I’ve been to’

WHEN Charles Munnery (pictured) returned from the World War 2 in 1947, instead of returning home to Queensland, he headed straight to Merrylands to check out his father’s birthplace.

The now 98-year-old loved the area so much he decided to stay and would become president of Merrylands RSL from 1960-74.
He later retired to the Central Coast but returned to take part in the club’s ANZAC Day dawn service at which he was guest speaker as well as the Sunday service the day before where he met Mayor Lisa Lake, saying Cumberland is in great hands.
“Out of all of the services I’ve been to, last week’s was by far the best,” he said.
“It was magnificent, so well organised by the sub-branch and club.
“I also couldn’t believe the improvements at the club; it is a world-class venue now.”
