Eggsellent chance for young to eggsell in farming for show

STUDENTS at Menai High School are ‘eggcited’ about their next challenge.

The school is taking part in the Sydney Royal School Egg Laying Competition, raising and caring for the baby chicks before exhibiting the birds – and their egg laying qualities – at the Sydney Royal Easter Show in April.
Hundreds of day-old baby chicks have been distributed to schools taking part in the show’s Poultry Competitions, which also include the Meat Bird Pairs Competition.
More than 100 schools will compete across the two competitions this year, with students selecting their healthiest chickens (three females for the egg competitions and two females and two males for the Meat Bird Pairs) to be exhibited and judged.
General Manager, Agriculture and Sydney Royal Easter Show, Murray Wilton, said the competitions provided invaluable industry experience for students interested in agricultural endeavours.
“The Sydney Royal school competitions are a wonderful opportunity for students to gain practical experience and knowledge of Australian farming practices through a structured program,” he said.
“An advantage of the program is that it requires limited space, which allows both rural and urban communities an equal opportunity to be involved.”
In addition to the live judging, students will create a PowerPoint presentation on how the chickens were raised and prepared for the show.
The Easter Show will be held from April 8-19. For more, visit eastershow.com.au.
