Students get chop to help honour teacher

SHAVING off their luscious locks for a good cause, four St Peter Chanel Catholic Primary Year 6 students have helped raise a record $1,300 for breast cancer research during their Annual Pink Week fundraiser.

Benji, Tyler, Teo and Jasmine, who had a partial chop, had many of their Kindergarten ‘buddies’ and rest of the school community donating to their cause and cheering them on during the hair shave.
“We were happy to face the clippers and help raise the funds,” they said.
Set up in 2018 to honour teacher Cindy Muscas who passed away from the disease, Pink Week also saw students take part in the ‘Annual Read for Mrs Muscas Competition’ whereby infants students would receive a raffle ticket for every book read and older students for every chapter read.
With teachers donating over 200 prizes for the raffle, students have excelled in the initiative so much that parents have asked if it can take place over a full term next year.
Organised by Religious Education Co ordinator Susie Mravunac and Assistant Principal Amanda Gahan, Pink Week culminated in Mrs Muscas’ family presenting student Anthony Suto with the inaugural ‘Cindy Muscas Faith in Action Award’.
“It was a great week and a highlight was seeing Anthony receive his award,” Ms Mravunac said.
“He is a Mini Vinnie volunteer and is always looking for ways to help those doing it tough; we really felt he embodied Cindy’s legacy of showing ‘faith in action’.
“Cindy would have also loved the fact that through this initiative, our kids are reading so much and really loving it.”
