Young box way out of boredom

WHEN first approached by Cumberland Council to set up online fitness classes for children and teens during the lockdown, Loco Fit Gym owner Elias Moralles jumped on board and is so amazed at their popularity he is thinking of retaining them when face to face classes resume most likely in December.

“We have about 30 kids in a class and they love it plus it’s just so good for them,” he said.
“The young boxers are learning all the discipline basics but they don’t realise it because they’re having so much fun.”
A former professional kick-boxer, the Merrylands gym owner is one of the coaches and says the turnout has been wonderful.
“Boxing sharpens kids’ problem-solving skills and they learn about health and fitness,” he said.
“We teach proper form, which prevents injuries and if you learn young, you remember these tools for life.”
Online classes coming up this this month include the Teens Loco Fit Tabata class for ages 12 to 18 on this Thursday, November 18, 4.30-5pm.
The class includes alternating periods of short, intense anaerobic exercise which is a great form of cardiovascular exercise.
Then Loco Box Junior for ages 12 to 18, is on offer on Tuesday, November 23, 4.30-5.15pm.
Teaching basic boxing skills and techniques, it helps youth keep physically active, while learning self-defence and confidence.
Example activities include warm up, shadow boxing, basic techniques, boxing combos and fun boxing activities for younger children like themed workouts.
