Career blossoms into first honour for nation

PADSTOW TAFE Floristry teacher David Berger is the first Australian to be certified as a judge with the American Institute of Floral Designers (AIFD).

Giving floristry students the opportunity to learn from one of the industry’s best, he joins international AIFD members who are at the forefront of the industry presenting educational programs and designing flower displays for some of the world’s most high-profile events such as the Academy Awards and presidential inaugurations.
“It’s an understatement to say I was excited when I received the news,” Mr Berger said.
His blossoming career with TAFE NSW began after two decades working as a florist for David Jones and bringing the annual David Jones Spring Shows to life.
He has also earned gold medals, representing Australia in four Floristry World Cups resulting in invitations to be an international judge and mentor with WorldSkills.
“So much of what I have experienced, created and discovered in floristry can’t be found in a textbook,” he said.
“I get so much enjoyment out of seeing students go from entering the industry to graduating with nationally recognised qualifications.”
Certificate IV Floristry student Selina Dickson said she lacked confidence but teachers were so supportive.
“In a short time, I think the whole class could see how far we had come – how many new skills we had learned,” she said.
“I had moments where I pinched myself thinking, I’m actually doing this.”
